"Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing.  People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."

Albert Einstein regarding the death of his friend Michele Angelo Besso

What are the dead made of?  If the essence or spirit of a human being is pure energy and we return to that state upon death, then it follows that in the death-state, the disincarnate retain the essence of pure energy.  This is supported by the 1st Law of Thermodynamics: Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.

But if the disincarnate are pure energy, how is it that some people are able to see them, feel them and/or interact with them?  From a physics standpoint, the disincarnate don’t have mass, or at least they don’t have mass all the time.  Mass is an object’s resistance to changing its speed or changing its energy level.  If disincarnates had constant mass, then we would share the same space with them, they would be visible to all people, we would be bumping into them and talking to them.  One might assume that everything has mass, but there are some things that don’t have mass, such as particles like bosons that mediate the fundamental portions of nature like electromagnetism and gravity.  One of the most plentiful particles in the universe is photons which mediates or carries the electromagnetic force.  If disincarnates are made of any material other than pure energy, it could be cohesive clouds of photons.  Perhaps they have a way of amassing photons around them and using them to interact with the physical world that the living knows.

This could work on a number of levels.  As previously stated, photons don’t have mass, so based on this theory, you would not come into contact with the disincarnate or notice them at all, unless there was a reason they wanted to be seen.  How would they use these photons to manifest?  Because photons mediate the electromagnetic force, perhaps they generate a static electric field to gather microscopic dust particles around them to project whatever shape they desire, including a representation of themselves.  Many accounts describe the disincarnate as transparent or translucent and sometimes as monochromatic like a gray or dark image.  If they are using a static electric field to gather microscopic dust particles around them, then this could be a reasonable description.

Another consideration is visible light.  Since photons mediate the entire electromagnetic spectrum that includes the wavelength of light that we all can see, if they can somehow control photons or they are made of photons, can they simply increase their energy level to a point where they are oscillating and become visible wave-light and thus visible to us?
